New Zealand's immigration requirements

We enjoy welcoming visitors to New Zealand and we’d like to think that when you come here that you have an experience to remember - but for the right reasons. So if you’re coming to New Zealand, it’s a good idea to make sure you have everything ready.

Citizens of some countries do not have to apply for a visa before they travel to New Zealand but must hold an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority).

Checking in for your trip

When you check in you must show that you:

have a valid passport or travel document, and
hold the right visa or an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority).
Australian and New Zealand citizens do not need a visa or an NZeTA.

Check your passport

You may not be allowed to check in if your passport is not valid for travel to New Zealand. Check that it will not expire until:

3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand, or
1 month after the date you plan to leave New Zealand — if your passport was issued by a country that has a New Zealand embassy or consulate that issues passports.

Make sure that your passport is valid and has not been:

damaged
reported as lost or stolen, or
invalidated by the government that issued it.

Do you need a visa or an NZeTA?

You do not need a visa or permit to visit New Zealand if you are a New Zealand/Australia citizen or Resident Permit holder.
If you are visiting on a passport from a visa waiver country you must hold an NZeTA. Click here to view a list of visa waiver countries and territories.
If you are visiting on a passport from a country not listed on the visa waiver countries and territories list, you must apply for a visa.

Arriving in New Zealand
As well as checking your passport and visa (or NZeTA), immigration may check that you have a genuine reason for coming to New Zealand.

If you are arriving in New Zealand on a visa or an NZeTA, you may be required to provide:

Travel tickets or evidence of onward travel arrangements
Evidence that you can support yourself financially while you are in New Zealand (approximately NZ$1000 per month per person).
