Summary: This two-day pre-conference fieldtrip will provide an opportunity for early-career researchers to meet and network prior to the conference while introducing New Zealand’s wide range of volcanic deposits, systems and their interaction with government and society. Travelling from Auckland to the conference venue at Rotorua, this fieldtrip will give an overview of the volcanism in New Zealand, including: (1) Monogenetic volcanism of Auckland – hazards associated with basaltic volcanism; (2) Plio-Pleistocene basaltic volcanism of the Waikato region with the ignimbrite deposits; (3) The large-volume rhyolitic magma system of Taupo and its associated geothermal activity.
In addition to providing an introduction to the volcanism of New Zealand (ideal to start the conference), this ECR-focused trip will include the contribution from guests from GNS Science to give context to field locations and monitoring systems. Social activities, including hot pools, stargazing, hike and communal cooking will also be proposed to enhance networking between participants. This is a reduced-cost trip (e.g. sleeping in halls/dorms), and preference will be given to early-career researchers and researchers working in resource-limited contexts. The trip also offers transport from Auckland to Rotorua, so no need to book an extra flight/bus to get to the conference centre!
Duration: 2 days (1 night): meeting in Auckland (meeting place TBA) on 27/01 for dinner/ECR icebreaker. Departure from Auckland on 28/01 in the morning and arrival in Rotorua before the IAVCEI icebreaker on 29/01. Night of the 28/01 will be spent in a hostel/backpacker/dorms in Taupo.
