The Organising Committee of the GSNZ Annual Conference 2022 invite researchers and professionals to submit abstracts for consideration and inclusion in the conference programme.

Conference themes and sessions

Our themes for the conference are:

   I.    Our Dynamic Planet: Magmatism and tectonics
   II.   Lessons from active Earth Systems: Messages from the past for the future
   III.  Living in A Dynamic GeoCultural landscape: Geosciences and society
   IV.  Facing the Future: Innovative applications and technologies in Geosciences

While we have specific sessions in each theme, we also encourage submissions on other topics within those five themes. If you are submitting an abstract to a specific session, please select the relevant session during your submission. If not, please select your chosen theme.


I. Our Dynamic Planet: Magmatism and tectonics

   a. Mauna Puia - Volcanoes and their eruptive products (LAVA NZ and Sedimentology SIGs endorsed)
   b. Igneous Petrology and Geochemistry (LAVA NZ and Geochemistry SIGs endorsed)
   c. Zealandia through space and time
   d. Seismotectonics of Aotearoa/ New Zealand and beyond
   e. Special Session: Evolution of an Active Caldera System: The Okataina Volcanic Centre

II. Lessons from active Earth Systems: Messages from the past for the future

   a. Natural hazards – from the geological record to forecasting
   b. Our changing landscapes; surface process dynamics, evolution, and hazards (in association with Sedimentology SIG)
   c. Understanding climate and environmental change (Friends of the Pleistocene SIG endorsed)
   d. Integrated Coastal Dynamics: Our Changing Coastline
   e. Marine geological processes and human impacts in the ocean

III. Living in A Dynamic GeoCultural landscape: Geosciences and society

   a. Advances in Communication, Education, and Disaster Risk Science
   b. GeoEducation, Outreach & International Development
   c. Science in response and recovery

IV. Facing the Future: Innovative applications and technologies in Geosciences

   a. Computational advances in Geosciences
   b. Remote Sensing and Earth Observation for Geological Applications
   c. Engineering Geology/Geomorphology: Advances and Applications in a Dynamic World
   d. Geochemical tools and applications to reconstruct environmental and climate change, human impact and Earth history in New Zealand,
        Australia and Antarctica (in association with Geochemistry SIG
   e. Geoscience for Future Energy Systems
   f. Mineral Deposits: Geology, Exploration and Resources

Guidelines

Format of submission 

  • Abstracts must be prepared using the template provided. Submissions not conforming to the template will not be reviewed. 
  • Abstracts should be submitted as a Word doc, not a PDF
  • Abstracts to be submitted in English 
  • Submissions should be no more than 300 words
  • You will be required to enter details for the author/co-authors separately during the submission process. (author name, affiliation, email address) 
  • If you are submitting on behalf of the Presenter/s, please have their email address/s ready to include in the submission
  • If you are submitting an abstract to a specific session, please select the relevant session during your submission; otherwise, please select your preferred theme.
  • Submissions are limited to 2 x abstracts per registered author (1 x oral and 1 x poster).

Invited Keynote Speakers

If you have been invited to give a ‘Keynote' paper please email this to directly to the conference conveners (a.v.zernack@massey.ac.nz), and DO NOT submit it via the online portal. You are also welcome to submit a standard abstract for consideration using the submission portal.

General Information

Language of Submission
All abstracts/papers must be submitted in English.

Word Count
Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words.

Review and Notification to Authors
All completed submissions will be reviewed. You will be informed by email, from gsnz@confer.co.nz, of the acceptance status of your abstract by 14 October 2022.

Registration
All presenters are required to register and pay the conference registration fee in order to be included in the programme and to present in person at the event. Registration and payment of registration fee by presenters of accepted abstracts must be completed by no later than  21 October 2022.  Please note Early Bird Registration closes on 21 October 2022. 

Publication
By submitting an abstract, authors agree to publication of chosen abstracts on the conference mobile app and conference proceedings or similar by GSNZ.

Presentation
Accepted oral presentations will be included within topical sessions of the official Conference programme. Posters will be on display during the conference and further details will be advised with the confirmation email.
