GSNZ 2020 Lunch Meetings

Lunch breaks have been allocated 1.5hours in the programme. The first 30 minutes delegates will have the chance to have lunch in C-Block, before moving to the respective lunch time meetings/events if applicable. Please note catering will not be served in the individual meeting rooms and will only be served in the C-Block foyer.

Majority of the meetings will take place in the Ernest Rutherford Building, a short walk from C-Block where the conference sessions, catering, exhibition and poster display are located. Viewing of the 'Map that changed the world' is in the Puaka-James Hight Building - Library.

The Road to Publication: Advice from Journal Editors

This lunchtime event is aimed at new authors who are seeking some advice about how the publishing process works, particularly those who are writing a first draft of a paper from their thesis or haven’t published for a long time.  We present the process from an editor’s point of view followed by an extensive time for questions and discussion.  Kari Bassett (Senior Editor of New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics) and Fei He (publishing programme manager for the Royal Society | Te Apārani supported by associate editors of NZJGG 

 
Life After University: Industry Advice for Students

Richmond Beetham (Coffey) and Clark Fenton (UC) will moderate a panel comprising industry practitioners who will provide advice and answer questions on a number of topics including: What opportunities await after university? What does industry look for in new graduates?  What should I highlight in my CV?  What are likely early career pathways?

After LavaNZ business is taken care of, we will be brainstorming for VolcanoFest 2022, which will be associated with the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly that will be held in Rotorua in January 2022. Come along armed with lots of fun volcano ideas to fill a marquee. Ben will be also discussing a NZ-wide approach to volcano outreach with schools.

The University of Canterbury holds an original hand-painted copy of William Smith’s 1815 “Delineation of the Strata of England and Wales, with parts of Scotland”, made famous more recently by Simon Winchester’s book “The map that changed the world”. This iconic map will be out on display during the conference 9-5pm 23-24 November (the Mon & Tues only), with a welcome opening at 12.30pm on Monday 23 November.

You do not need to be attending the conference to attend the map viewing.
