Call for Abstracts

The Organising Committee of the GSNZ Annual Conference 2020, invite researchers and professionals to submit abstracts for consideration and inclusion in the conference programme.

Topics for Submission

Our themes for the conference are:

  1. Tectonic Processes
  2. Unravelling the Geological Record
  3. Climate and the Environment
  4. Linking People and Geosciences
We have specific sessions in each theme and also encourage submissions on other topics within those themes. 

1. Tectonic Processes

  • Active tectonics of New Zealand - 40 years of advances
  • Subduction to Strike-Slip Transition in Central New Zealand
  • Volcanism in Te Rui-a-Māui/Zealandia and the South Pacific (in association with LAVA NZ SIG)

2. Unravelling the Geological Record

  • Unravelling the seascape: processes that shape the marine environment of Aotearoa/New Zealand
  • Sedimentation from Source to Sink: Modern Analogues and Ancient Examples (in association with Sedimentology SIG)

3. Climate and the Environment

  • Hydrogeology for life and the environment (in association with Hydrogeology SIG)
  • Climate Past and Present (in association with Friends of the Pleistocene SIG)
  • Geochemical tools and applications to reconstruct environmental and climate change, human impact and Earth history in New Zealand, Australia and Antarctica (in association with Geochemistry SIG)
  • The cryosphere

4. Linking People and Geosciences

  • A Decade of Disasters: Recent Advances in Engineering Geology in Aotearoa
  • Geoscience of Petroleum in New Zealand (in association with Oil and Gas SIG)
  • Mineral Deposits: Geology, Exploration and Resources (in association with AusIMM)
  • Transdisciplinary approaches to understanding human-environmental transformations
  • Geo-Education, Outreach, & International Development (GeOID); including the Covid 19 Experience (in association with GeOID SIG)

Guidelines

Format of submission 

  • Abstracts to be submitted in English 
  • Submissions should be no more than 300 words
  • You will be required to enter in the author/co-authors and affiliations separately during the submission process
  • If you have any special characters or text formatting that is not supported by the abstract submission portal - please upload a copy of your original abstract as a Word doc in the relevant field provided on the submission form.
  • You will be required to enter a bio for the Presenting Author (max. 100 words) 
  • If you are submitting on behalf of the Presenter/s, please have their email address/s ready to include in the submission
  • If you are submitting an abstract to a specific session, please select the relevant session during your submission

Pre-recorded Presentations

In order to be prepared to implement a rapid change to a virtual format if alert levels increase, we will be asking all accepted abstract presenters to pre-record a shorter version of their presentation and all poster presenters to prepare and submit a PDF of their poster to the conference organisers by 6 November 2020, 2 weeks prior to the conference. More details will be provided with your acceptance letter.

General Information

Language of Submission
All abstracts/papers must be submitted in English or accompanied with an English version.

Word Count
Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words.

Review and Notification to Authors
All completed submissions will be reviewed. You will be informed by email (from gsnz@confer.co.nz) of the acceptance status of your abstract by 28 September 2020.

Registration
All presenters are required to register and pay the conference registration fee in order to be included in the programme and to present in person at the event. Registration and payment of registration fee by presenters of accepted abstracts must be completed by no later than 12 October 2020.

Publication
By submitting an abstract, authors agree to publication of chosen abstracts on the conference mobile app and conference proceedings or similar by GSNZ.

Presentation
Accepted oral presentations will be included within topical sessions of the official Conference programme. Posters will be on display through the conference and further details will be advised with the confirmation email.
