Boosting Academic Productivity with AI: Rapid Hypothesis Testing with Claude Code

Learn to use Claude Code, an AI coding assistant, to speed up your research without cutting corners. Using one real dataset, the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake sequence, we run a full analysis pipeline live: download data, plan the work, write and run code, build a conference deck, and create an interactive app. Along the way we test six hypotheses about earthquakes and let the data decide. We also cover the hard parts: hallucinations, verification, and data privacy. A live demonstration, no laptop or setup needed. All materials are shared so you can reproduce it yourself.

This workshop will explore the interface of Indigenous and Western sciences and interests in scientific drilling (e.g., coring lakes, coastal areas, landslides, bedrock or offshore environments). Māori science students and mentors joined First Nations People from Australia, North and South America onboard the international research vessel JOIDES Resolution in 2024. In co-creation by the shipboard participants, this workshop aims to start conversation and create space for indigenous-led interests, while growing an indigenous trans-Tasman (trans-Pacific) community (including Pasifika) in scientific drilling. Following the Kaupapa onboard, we will focus on fostering knowledge and understanding among our community, for cross-cultural learning and collaboration in scientific exploration. We welcome both indigenous scientists and individuals interested/operating in spaces involving indigenous peoples and earth sciences.
