The University of Auckland Structures Testing Laboratory (STL) complex is located at the Newmarket campus and opened in 2015. The facility includes a 9 m high reaction wall in two directions, a 20 x 10 m strong floor, a 3.6 m square 15T capacity shake table, and integrated ancillary laboratories and workshops.
The STL is capable of conducting a wide range of structures and earthquake engineering related experiments. The facility is well equipped with a range of testing machines and hydraulic actuators that can be configured in a range of test setups. The STL is a busy lab utilised for both post-graduate and under-graduate research as well as contract research and testing.
The visit will include a tour of the lab facilities and short presentations of current projects. Tours to other labs at the Newmarket campus can be arranged for those interested (including geomechanics, fluids, transport/pavements, composites, etc).

The University of Canterbury has two facilities for structural testing: the Structures Wing Laboratory and the Structural Engineering Laboratory.
The Wing Laboratory has a total of 132.7m2 of strong floor and houses a unidirectional shaking table, three Avery testing machines, and a 10MN Dartec Universal testing machine. This laboratory is the same space that was used by the late Professors Park, Paulay and Priestley to conduct their groundbreaking research. The Structural Engineering Laboratory is the newest of the testing facilities and was opened in 2016. It allows the testing of full-scale test specimens with a high capacity 500m2 strong floor and 9.2m high L shaped strong wall. The tour will cover both of these facilities in addition to the research currently being conducted within them.
