Optional Excursions 

Friday 15 July 2022, 1.30pm departure

Two excursions within Christchurch are offered for the afternoon of Friday 15 July.  Please note, we are using local suppliers and the numbers are limited and allocated on a first-in basis. On the registration form please sign up for yourself and you are welcome to bring an accompanying person.

City Highlights Walking Tour

A guided tour for an informative and leisurely walk of about (2.5 – 3.0 km) over 2 hours.
Meet at 1.30pm at the Red Kiosk near the Canterbury Museum on Rolleston Avenue (10-minute walk from Te Pae).  The walk ends at approx 3.30pm at the National Earthquake memorial (10-minute walk to Te Pae).

The walk includes:

  • Māori and planned European settlements
  • Key heritage buildings, other city features and Avon River area
  • 2010-2011 earthquakes and the post-earthquake city

International Antarctic Centre

Transport departs Te Pae at 1.30pm and leaves the Antarctic Centre by 4 pm, going first to the Airport by approx 4.30pm or returning to Te Pae by approx 5.00pm.  If you would like to be dropped off at the airport you can take your luggage with you which be stored on the coach.

  • A Guided tour through the Antarctic Attraction and Penguin Encounter where you can learn more about the science and care of the colony of rescued Little Blue Penguins 
  •  Experience an ‘Antarctic Storm’ in the Snow & Ice Room filled with real snow and ice chilled to -8°Celsius. During the Antarctic Storm, a simulated Antarctic wind blows at 42km/h, which introduces a wind chill factor making it feel like -18°Celsius. 
  •  Explore the Gallery which contains comprehensive ‘hands-on’ displays on everything Antarctic including current science research, animal adaptations and geology. 
  •  Interact with science in the hands-on ANT 101/Science Alive space. 
  •  The Hägglund Field Trip is an all-terrain Polar vehicle which will traverse steep mounds, a crevasse and rough terrain to display its unique capabilities.
  •  4D Theatre. This exclusive 3D movie is enhanced with special effects, such as snow falling, bubbles, seat motion and the occasional water spray.
