Communication of Seismic Building Risk with Commercial Tenants

Organiser: Catalina Miranda, Joint Centre for Disaster Research, Massey University
Date: Friday 12 April
Time: 9.00am - 12.30pm
Venue: Urban Hub (Tory Room), 2/318 Lambton Quay, Wellington Central
Attendee Number: 40 max

Communicating seismic risk information to building developers, owners and tenants can be challenging. Conveying what a code minimum building is, what %NBS is (and isn’t), and what benefits a more resilience building design has sounds simple but anecdotal evidence suggests that building owners and users still do not understand. What can we do to communicate more clearly? What messages work and which ones don’t? How can we influence behaviour?

Join us in this workshop to share best practice tips for communicating seismic risk. We’ll be sharing the latest research on seismic risk communication as well as some live cases from industry. Come and share your experiences and help us identify where more work is needed to support practitioners to communicate seismic risk more effectively, to promote decision-making that improves seismic resilience.

The workshop is being led by a group of researchers from Resilient Organisations and the Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University.

The organisers - members of the QuakeCoRE Community - thank QuakeCoRE, an Aotearoa New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission-funded Centre, for funding and supporting this workshop.
