Auckland Airport

The Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL) Domestic Processor is the next major phase of development for the Airport as it looks to integrate both international and domestic terminals under one roof and support future growth.  The design and construction monitoring of the structures is being delivered by a combined team of Holmes and Mott MacDonald.

Upon completion, the 80,000m2 Domestic Processor will support growing passenger volumes, provide for a seamless passenger experience between international and domestic, provide improved pre-flight retail and dining experiences, support a 26% increase in seat capacity through 12 jet aircraft (Type C) gates with six gates able to take widebody Code E jets, and expanded luggage capacity with the introduction of a new individual carrier system (ICS).

To facilitate the development, the Domestic Processor is split into multiple seismically separated buildings – Pier, Baggage Makeup Building, Baggage Reclaim Hall, all the structures are designed to IL3 and to the AIAL specific design requirements for flexibility and resilience.

  • The Pier is a 240m long structure composed of structural steel frames with a CLT flooring system; to support the jets, 12 fixed link bridges are located around the perimeter of the Pier.
  • The Baggage Makeup Building is a two-way steel moment frame structure, featuring CHS steel columns and reduced beam sections (RBS) along the frame beams.
  • The Baggage Reclaim Hall is a “double-height” steel column structure featuring a two-way truss frame at the roof level.  The truss frame supports spans up to 27m while providing 10.5m clear heights to the underside of the ceiling.
With the terminal set to open by the end of the decade, works are now underway with bulk excavation, piling, foundation works, structural steel installation, and placement of reinforcing and concrete all in progress. Visitors will be treated to a good cross section of structural works in view as part of the tour.

The Air New Zealand Hangar

The Hangar 4 project is the newest of Air New Zealand's service hangars at Auckland Airport. The project has required a multidisciplinary design team, from geotechnical review to major civil works and specialist aviation services. The key structural focus is the new Main Hangar (Hangar 4) which is composed of 97m-span trusses. The majority of the Hangar is constructed from engineered timber, with steel trusses providing bracing and additional stiffness at the main door. The Hangar is clad with ETFE, providing a light, soft silhouette. Studio Pacific Architecture are lead consultants, with Holmes providing structural engineering. The timber structure is designed by Dunning Thornton as subconsultants to the contractor. AECOM have provided civil, geotechnical, and MEP services, with Holmes and GHD as fire protection engineers, and eCubed as sustainability lead.
