It is my pleasure to announce the theme of the PPTA Education Conference in April 2020.
“Whakatairangatia! Advancing the dream of public education”
It will be nine long years since our last Education conference and the time is right for PPTA to take a lead. Yes, we’ve had the Education Conversations connected with the Tomorrow’s Schools and NCEA reviews, but it’s time for korero where we set the agenda, not respond to the agenda of others. We have the knowledge, mātauranga, the experience and values to move education forward.
And the theme? Advancing the dream of public education. Civil rights activist and educator W. E. B. DuBois put it this way, ‘Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental'.
This conference will be teachers talking to one another about that right, about teaching and learning. Teachers do the mahi, we are the experts in the room. Sure we’ll be hearing from Pasi Sahlberg about world trends in education and their risks, and have Rawiri Toia leading a discussion on culturally sustainable pedagogies, but there will be opportunities for teachers to be sharing with and learn from each other.
Such is PPTA’s standing in the NZ education sector that Victoria University of Wellington has come on board as a partner to support this education conference.
We want to hear and learn from each other, so look out early in Term 4 for expressions of interest to present workshops and share your research.
But most importantly, join us in April at the Pipitea Campus of Victoria University of Wellington to listen, learn, share and be heard.
