Explosive sills, submarine volcanoes, and the long-lived Dunedin Volcano: Cenozoic intraplate volcanism of Otago

Leaders: James DL White, Marco Brenna

Duration: 3 – 4 days (to be confirmed)

Summary: This fieldtrip will begin with the early-mid Cenozoic Waiareka-Deborah volcanic field that formed on NZ's submerged landmass far from the contemporary shoreline. Topics to be addressed are intraplate volcanism, shelf-depth submarine to emergent volcanism, and for Dunedin the eruptive styles, compositions, and tempo of activity in a long-lived (~5 Myr) composite volcano. It lies within a field of dispersed monogenetic volcanoes – what made volcanism at Dunedin become localised and persistent within the field.  The trip will visit spectacular pillow lavas, hydroclastic breccias, a stack of Surtseyan submarine volcanoes, shallow-emplaced lithic-choked sill, xenolith-rich mineral breccia. The second and third days examine deposits of varied compositions from different times during development of the long-lived Dunedin composite/shield volcano. Dike swarms, submarine and subaerial pyroclastics, lavas.
