Welcome to the emapi conference 2025

Welcome to Christchurch!
On behalf of the Local Organising Committee, it’s a real pleasure to welcome you to the 17th International Conference on the Ecology and Management of Alien Plant Invasions, hosted by Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 2–5 September 2025. We’re proud to partner with the Centre for One Biosecurity Research, Analysis and Synthesis (COBRAS), Lincoln University, and Tourism New Zealand to bring this event to life.

A Global Tradition
This conference has a rich history, beginning in 1992 in Loughborough, UK, and most recently held in Pucón, Chile in 2023. This year, we’re thrilled to welcome over 160 attendees from more than 25 countries, with strong representation from across the Pacific. Our conference dinner will celebrate our Pacific setting and showcase the vibrant Māori culture, offering a unique and memorable experience.

A Stunning Setting
Christchurch is nestled between the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Banks Peninsula and the majestic Southern Alps—a perfect backdrop for both international visitors and invasion biologists. The South Island is often considered the most beautiful part of New Zealand, and we hope you’ll take time to explore its wonders.

From Ecology to Action
Our theme, “From Ecology to Action: Innovative Solutions for Plant Invasion Management,” reflects the urgent need to turn science into solutions. Throughout the week, we’ll dive into the latest research and practical approaches to managing alien plant invasions. We’re grateful to our sponsors—Bioprotection Aotearoa, Biosecurity New Zealand, Kiwicare, and Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research—for their vital contributions to plant invasion management in New Zealand.

What’s in Store
Our seven symposia will include important topics including:

  • Advances in biological control of weeds
  • An overview of a national programme tackling invasive conifers
  • Cutting-edge tools for risk assessment
  • Above- and below-ground impacts of alien plants
  • The role of environmental change in plant invasions

We’re also excited to host an exceptional lineup of international plenary speakers, offering fresh insights into the key challenges and opportunities in invasion biology.

Field Trips & Local Insights
New Zealand is a living laboratory for invasive plant management—from biological control to community-led initiatives and long-term national strategies. Lincoln University sits at the heart of it all, and we’ve organised three special field trips to connect you with local experts and on-the-ground efforts that are rarely seen elsewhere.

Make the Most of Your Visit
Spring in New Zealand is a magical time. We encourage you to explore the breathtaking landscapes, encounter unique wildlife, and immerse yourself in the rich culture. We hope this conference will be both stimulating and inspiring, and a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow researchers and practitioners from around the world.

Nau mai haere mai,

Philip Hulme
